Frequently asked questions

What is Sattvic Meals Foundation?

Sattvic Meals Foundation (SMF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity and ensuring no student goes hungry. SMF is the brainchild of Akshaya Patra Foundation, the largest mid-day meal scheme in the world, and serves over 2.2 million children across 24,000 schools in India every day.

How are you planning to do this?

The Foundation envisions a hunger-free future for students across America. In its initial phase, SMF is set to serve 50,000 meals in 2025—approximately 250 meals per day—with an ambitious goal of delivering 1 million cumulative meals nationwide by 2030.

Why are you starting with community colleges?

In a survey of over 66,000 students across 88 community colleges in California, an overwhelming 50% of students admitted to being worried about getting balanced meals, while 34% of them regularly skipped or reduced portions as they did not have enough money. At Sattvic Meals Foundation, we want to change this.

Why vegetarian food?

We believe in creating sattvic meals that do not just feed the body, but also the soul. We also believe that wholesome, tasty, fresh food, cooked with the purest of intentions brings health, wellbeing and good karma.

How can I help?

You can help in multiple ways. Donate to the program. Partner with SMF to contribute your CSR funds. Sign up to become a volunteer to either help prep and pack the meals, or deliver and serve them at the community colleges.
